Centerboard won't deploy. Appears to be stuck in the trunk.

Post by David M »

Have a 1994 Dragonfly 1000 that is being renovated. Several months ago, while on the hard in the boatyard, the centerboard had some minor fiberglass repairs and was re-coated with antifouling paint.
Tried to deploy the centerboard yesterday and it won't budge from the trunk.
Removed the table and the lines do not appear to be fouled.
Looking for suggestions to diagnose and fix the problem.
Thank you.

Hard to tell

David
- Can you shake it? Or is it completely stuck?
- Are you on shore? Can you get below?
By vibration one can tell where it is stuck and where it is lose.
I would check the mounting screw. Is it in right position?

Thanks for replying!
Answers below:

- Can you shake it? Or is it completely stuck? TAPPED THE TOP OF THE CENTERBOARD AND THIS LOWERED IT BY ABOUT 6", NOW IT IS COMPLETELY STUCK. CAN'T SHAKE IT.

- Are you on shore? Can you get below? BOAT IS ON A LIFT. WENT BELOW IN A KAYAK AND THE CENTRAL 1/3 IS COMPLETELY STUCK WITH NO ROOM TO EVEN SLIP IN A THIN METAL BLADE. TRIED LUBRICATION FROM ABOVE AND BELOW.

By vibration one can tell where it is stuck and where it is lose. STUCK IN THE MID 1/3 IN THE LOWER ASPECT OF THE FIBERGLASS TRUNK.

I would check the mounting screw. Is it in right position? WHERE IS THE ACCESS TO
THE MOUNTING SCREW?

Additional questions:
*Do you think it would be helpful to knock the board back UP and then scrape or sand off any debris/dried paint in the lower part of the trunk?
*What about paint remover to take off some of the ablative paint? Would sanding the accessible surfaces of the centerboard help?
*How much force can you safely apply to knock down the board from above?
*Is there any way to mechanically pull down the centerboard from below?
*Is it safe to sail this boat in light to moderate winds without the centerboard down?

Thanks.

Mounting screw

Post by Christian »

The board is a quite simple design; it hangs on a axis in the front of the case. In down position the screw can't be reached.
In folded position you can see the screw head close to the front of the case. It is usually a metric 6 shape = Allen (according to google translate) (Image: https://www.qwant.com/?q=sexkantsnyckel ... source=web )
So from below the screw can be unscrewed.

The process of removing the board is to get under and unscrew the board, then let it down in sail position. Then can it be lifted of the axis.

But you can't move it, got a feeling it is made a little bit longer by the repair and has moved aft, have you tried to push up in the front part of the board to make it move in the incision? (The axis is in the incision, and the screw locks it from falling off.)

Do you need a drawing?
