problem with uk sails tape drive carbon

Post by schleisurfer »

I found a spot in my mainsail where the carbonfibres lost contact to the panel and the fibers themselves lose their shape.

Minor flaw or massive problem ?

How can this be repaired ?

Anybody experienced similar problems with tape drive sails.

Regards
Holger

tape drive carbon -problems

Post by jerry99 »

I had north Sails 3Di Sails with carbon/Kevlar laminated sails. Great sails for performance and trim, poor for durability.
It is no big problem for the moment, but it is the beginning of the end of life of the sail. If not repaired quickly, water will ingress and the delamination will increase. Take a patch of repair film (you find special repair patches online or ask a local sailmaker) and put a rather big patch on the damaged part of the sail. Check out if the damage is in both sides. If you don’t have repair film, yo can use any adhesive or even sealant. Important is there may be no moisture in the inner structure between the films and after the repair it should be thigh.
