Inboard aka/centre-hull hinge pins (swing-wing Dfs)

Post by parkhouse »

I lost one of the stainless steel hinge pins around which the forward aka rotates when being swung in or out. Fortunately, I spotted the hole before going sailing. Quorning's comment was that the pins are not vertical and the pressure on them is normally in an upward direction. Hence they are inserted from the bottom and held in place by a pozi3 6mm screw. My boat, a Df1000, was moored unfolded with the port ama hard against two large fenders during a gale. I imagine that the screw had worked its way loose, possibly during a North Sea crossing, and the unusual loads on the ama caused the pin to fall out.
Suggestion: check the securing screws and if any are not tight, remove them, apply a liberal coating of loctite and re-insert.
