Main halyard and quick link replacement questions

Actually two seperate questions for 800 R owner's from a new owner.
First, I should have looked better when the mast was down, but it seems the angle from the head of the sail to mast sheave is pretty extreme when the sail is up, and I am having trouble getting good halyard tension. It ocurred to me that perhaps the halyard was supposed to go first to the aft extension at the top of the mast,(where my topping lift is currently attached), and then to the sheave at the top of the mast providing a straighter upward pull. Any input would be appreciated.
Secondly, I am thinking about using three shackles for the shroud to backstay connection instead of the quick link, as this seems like an area of heavy load, and it seems like the shackle setup would be stronger. I was wondering if anybody had done this, or had any issues wqith the quick links failing.
Thanks,
Dan
